Should a water treatment sale start with a free in-home test?

Start with a real test of the water, not a demo. Florida’s attorney general warns that reagent demos can make any water, even spring water, look like it fails. A hardness test can size a softener, but for wells and health contaminants EPA points owners to certified labs, which charge about $100 to $300.

  • New York requires a lab-based performance data sheet before the sale is final.
  • Californians 65 and older get 5 business days to cancel; others get 3.
  • Install after the cancellation window closes, not the same afternoon.

Do the new PFAS rules require homeowners to install a filter?

No. EPA’s 2024 limits of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS bind public water systems, which must comply by April 26, 2029, or by 2031 for systems that request it if a May 2026 proposal is finalized. They don’t cover private wells or require home treatment. Sell on the homeowner’s test results, not on a deadline.

  • Current NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 tests take PFOA and PFOS to a combined 20 ppt, not 4 ppt each.
  • A May 2026 proposal would drop limits for PFHxS, PFNA, GenX and the mixture index.
  • Private wells aren’t federally regulated; EPA suggests testing them every year.

What does a water softener or whole-house system cost in 2026?

Guides put a softener at about $1,200 to $3,800 installed and a softener with whole-house filtration and UV at $2,650 to $5,400, while whole-house reverse osmosis runs $4,800 to $8,000. In-home dealer packages run higher because they bundle premium equipment, drinking-water RO, warranties and service.

  • Keep salt, filters and service plans out of the financed amount; bill them as you go.
  • An under-sink filter or lab test is usually cash: programs start near $1,000, and minimums vary.
  • A softener loop, drain and outlet can add $650 to $1,950 to the install.
  • Premium dealer-brand softeners run $2,500 to $4,500, against $800 to $1,800 for store brands.

What rules shape a softener install, and when does the dealer get paid?

Some places restrict salt-based softeners: California lets local agencies ban new units after a water board finding, Connecticut bars softener backwash into septic systems, and Texas requires demand-regenerating units on septic. Most programs pay after the homeowner confirms the install is complete, and some pay at signing.

  • Beyond the down payment, California bars collecting ahead of the work, even from a lender.
  • Texas requires a water treatment specialist license unless the installer is a plumber.
  • In California, new softeners that regenerate on site must regenerate on demand.
  • Each lender’s documents explain any security interest it takes in the equipment.

Water treatment financing questions, answered.

A water treatment technician shows a homeowner couple their financing options on a tablet beside a new softener and whole-house filter in their garage.

How can water treatment dealers offer customer financing?

Present it after the test results and the price, as one way to pay beside cash, with the same price either way. Your rep sends one branded application for the installed system; participating lenders review it in turn, and on eligible programs the lender pays your company. Ottri never bills your dealership.

Can one application cover a softener, iron filter, UV and drinking-water RO?

Yes, as one contracted system priced once and within each program’s limits. Itemize the equipment, loop, drain, outlet and permit so the lender sees the full install, and keep salt delivery, filter changes and service plans off the application; bill those as the homeowner uses them.

Does an NSF-certified filter get PFAS down to EPA’s limit?

Not necessarily. Current NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 tests confirm PFOA and PFOS reduction to a combined 20 parts per trillion, while EPA’s utility limit is 4.0 each. Quote the certificate for the exact model and contaminant, and name the body that certified it, since WQA and others certify to the same standards.

What claims can we make about contaminants and health?

Only what the model’s certificate supports, under NSF/ANSI 42, 44, 53, 55, 58 or 401. In California, a device must be on the State Water Board’s list before any health claim, and New York requires a performance data sheet before the sale. Leave skin, hydration and disease benefits out; the FTC expects scientific proof for claims like these.

We already have a water lender or a maker’s program. Why add Ottri?

Keep the program your dealership already uses. Ottri adds a second path under your own brand: when that program says no, or approves a smaller amount than the quote, the homeowner applies once and participating lenders review it in turn. Check whether your dealer agreement names which lender goes first. Joining creates no manufacturer partnership, and Ottri never bills you.

What happens when the first lender declines a water treatment system?

The application moves to the next eligible lender without the homeowner retyping it, and before each step the screen says whether the credit check is soft or hard. Standards differ by lender, so a later one may approve, sometimes for less than you asked; revise the proposal before you install. If none approves, a smaller system that treats what the test shows may fit the budget.

Does the 3-day right apply if the homeowner asked for the water test?

Yes. A sale of $25 or more at the home carries 3 business days to cancel even when the homeowner invited you, and Californians 65 and older get 5. Install after the window closes; in 2014 a California court ordered restitution from a dealer accused of installing more than 150 systems before buyers could cancel.

What do I need to sign up?

Create your account online, then add your EIN and company details, any water treatment or plumbing license your state requires, an insurance certificate, a sample sales contract, the owner’s ID and the account for deposits. There’s no minimum to join; Ottri reviews every dealership before it goes live, and each lender then decides on its own terms, such as time in business.

Who approves the financing and sends the funds?

The lender decides on the application, sets the terms and, on eligible programs, pays your dealership directly; most pay once the homeowner confirms the install is complete, and some pay at signing. Ottri Global LLC is a licensed loan broker, NMLS 2776988, and is not a lender.

Can we promise a homeowner the system will pay for itself?

No. Florida’s attorney general sued a seller that promised monthly payments to offset the homeowner’s financing, and buyers said they didn’t arrive as promised. Show the full price, the lender’s terms on the homeowner’s phone, and the running costs of salt, filters and service, then let the homeowner decide.
